Let's Go Skating January 2022
Happy to be back in-class learning and creating some fantastic art to celebrate the winter season in Grade 3-4. This mixed media piece uses oil pastels and cardboard cut out skates with some flashy silver foil blades to top it off. Hopefully you get a chance to enjoy a skate on the canal, or on one of the many rinks around Ottawa this winter.

Students created some beautiful poppy art for Remembrance day, They used watercolours to paint their background over the music notes for the "Last Post". The bright poppies were made using red paper printed with the John McCrae poem, In Flanders Fields. From our reading of the book "Bunny the Brave War Horse" a story of a Canadian horse that helped the soldiers in France during the first world war, and the board remembrance day service, students became familiar with some of the symbolisms of war/peace that were used in their art.

Worms! October 2021
Our Grade 3 Scientists have been learning all about soil. One of the living things found in soil are worms. Worms help to increase the amount of air and water that gets into the soil. They break down organic matter, like leaves and grass into things that plants can use. They also help to "turn" the soil—bringing down organic matter from the top and mixing it with the soil below. We have created a worm habitat in a large jar to observe the worm activity for the week, and then we will return the worms to their natural habitat. A great hands-on learning experience.! |

Honouring Indigenous Floral Beading Designs
Zoom in close to see the detailed floral designs created using pointillism, and markers. While it is not even close to the complexity of actual beading, the concentration our grade 3-4 artists used to create these intricate dot paths of colour is quite impressive.

On Thursday September 30th, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and Orange Shirt Day our Grade 3-4 class learned about the Indigenous children who were sent away to residential schools in Canada We read a nonfiction article from the Canadian Reader about the history of the residential schools and a story called , “When I was Eight” by Christy Jordan Fenton and Margaret Pokiak Fenton that demonstrated the strength and resilience of a young girl not willing to let the residential school system bring her down. We honoured the lives of the Indigenous children by painting symbols and meaningful words like: hope, love, believe, peace, respect, strength, truth, healing on rocks to acknowledge that Every Child Matters!
