What's New 2020-2021
February 2021
Throughout the month of February for Black History Month, Viscount Alexander students have been studying a variety of Black arts and creating art in their style. Our Grade 3-4 Class learned about Alma Woodsey Thomas. She was born in 1891 in Georgia, Alma Thomas lived primarily in Washington DC. She is an expressionist abstract painter. She started her professional artist career after retiring from teaching. She was the first African American woman to have a solo exhibit at the Whitney Museum of Art in 1972 at the age of 82. Interesting fact, Barack Obama selected two of her pieces to be added to the White House Art collection while he was president. Students enjoyed learning about Alma Thomas and did an amazing job painting in her style. Their colourful artwork is brightening up the hallway.

Let's Talk Science- Butterflies
On Friday October 9th, we had a zoom workshop with university students from "Let's Talk Science". We learned all about Butterflies and had a close up look at the Butterfly show at Carleton University. In the Green house we saw some beautiful butterflies flying around one of the ones pictured looked like an owl. We learned how butterflies use their probiscus, straw like tongue, to drink the nectar from the flowers. They also eat fruit and even animal poop. Afterwards, we made some butterfly mobiles. |
Growth Mindset
Students are learning about the importance of having a Growth Mindset. Having a growth mindset means we use positive self talk and we believe in ourselves. We are open to trying new things. We are determined to reach our goals,
and we never give up! Of course we will make
mistakes along the way, but mistakes are part of
learning. We have read some stories this year that help us see real people and fictional characters who persevere, for example, The Most Magnificent Thing, and Terry Fox. Check out the student's awesome photos and growth mindset quotes. We will continue to build our growth mindset throughout the year and beyond.
