Saying Farewell to Forest School April 20, 2017
Forest School has been a wonderful experience for our Grade 3-4 class. It didn’t matter if it was blue skies and sunshine, a freezing -27 or a sopping wet, rainy day, there were no complaints, and we all made the most out of every minute. From discovering our ice village, climbing trees, roasting apples, discovering a deer carcass, building with sticks, rocks and pulleys, finding snakes and salamanders, spying live deer in the forest, mucking about in the ponds and puddles or cooking our vegetable soup over the open fire, forest school was full of awesome moments. I hope these positive memories spent in nature stay with our students forever and that they will continue to embrace outdoor adventures in their future.
Forest School
For six Wednesdays: March 8th, 22nd, 29th, April 5th, 12th, and 19th, our Grade 3-4 and Mrs. Benjamin's JK=SK class gets to spend the day at Forest School. I hope you have been hearing lots of interesting stories about our adventures. Every week we have had new experiences and discoveries. See photos of our ice village and roasting apples below. It has been amazing to see the excitement and curiosity that has been brought out in the students through nature. Upon our return each Wednesday, students write a recount about the highlights of their day while it is fresh in their mind. Students are using their journal notes, and my weekly photos to create slideshow diaries of our Forest school experience.

Canada Audio Book December 1, 2016
Our student teacher Erin Bowdridge, (Miss B. as she is known in class) helped our Grade 3-4 class create an Audio book “All About Canada”. Each student had a different topic about Canada to research and write about, independently. Then students drew pictures to go along with their text and finally Miss B. recorded students reading their sections. We even had a class vote on submitted entries for our book cover illustration and title. A true team effort, we hope you enjoy. Happy 150th Birthday Canada! |
War Letters November 17, 2016
Our Grade 3/4 class read a story entitled “A Bear in War” by Stephanie Innes. It is the true story of a father who leaves the family farm in Quebec when he goes off to fight in France in World War 1. His daughter sends her teddy bear over seas to protect her father. Students learned about the time period in history and the effects of war on the family in order to write letters from the different perspectives of the characters in the story. Start to finish, their work shows an understanding of perspective and a connection to the character’s perseverance. If you would like to see the actual teddy bear, it can be found in a glass case at the War Museum here in Ottawa.
