"I scream, You scream, We all scream for ICECREAM!" The hot weather has finally arrived, and with it comes thoughts of cool icecream treats! We wrote about it using a variety of descriptive adjectives, and we created these delicious, multiple scoop, colourful sundaes and cones! Enjoy the sunshine!

May 2016 Literature Circles:
Students have been busy reading the novel “Frindle” by Andrew Clement as part of Literature Circles. Each week students read assigned chapters, create a summary of the chapters and complete their weekly job. The Job assignments rotate week to week, you could be the summarizer, or questioner, connector, word wizard or visualizer. Later on in the week we have our Literature circle group meetings, which are like a mini book club. Students get a chance to discuss the chapters, voice their opinions and share their weekly work. One student each week has the role of the Director. He/She keeps the meeting rolling and ensures everyone gets a chance to participate. Ask your child all about Frindle, it is a great story!

How to Blow a Bubble!
January 2016
We have been working on procedural writing in Grade 3-4. Writing clear, well organized instructions on how to do specific things. After reading all about the invention of Bubble Gum, we decided to write about how to blow a bubble. We did a class survey ahead of time to find out who could blow a bubble and we discovered that half our students could blow a bubble and half couldn’t…yet. Then we closed our classroom door, (shhhh no gum chewing in school) and opened a few packages of Hubba Bubba, since we needed to practice and be reminded of the steps. By the end of class, we almost had our whole class blowing bubbles, and a few determined students that are going to keep on trying. We also had some terrific procedural writing, and this fun display. I took a picture when I first hung it up with the inflated balloons, and then one the next day after most of the balloons deflated, boo hoo. Oh well, at least we can now see the Grade 3-4 faces. Happy bubble blowing!

Which Cereal would you choose? December 2015
Students have been working hard; combining Health, Media literacy and Visual Arts to create cereal boxes. After learning about advertising strategies, students created a name for their own cereals and meticulously planned their boxes thinking about colour, font, characters, prizes, taste and more. Our finished products made an interactive hallway display, in which all classes had an opportunity to vote for their favourites.

Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow!
December 2015
There might not be any white fluffy stuff yet but our Grade 3-4 students are hoping for some real snowflakes for the holiday season. (Mrs. Contant, on the other hand, is okay for the snow to hold off a little while longer.)

Peace November 2015
Throughout the month of November we have been focusing on a theme of peace; in our reading, in our writing and in our art. We have had interesting discussions about war and peace, and we have made text to text connections between books and text to self connections with our own day to day lives. Students also did a tremendous job learning lines and preparing for our dramatic presentation of “Why Wear a Poppy?” for the Remembrance Day Assembly.

Hooray for our Peacemakers of tomorrow, they are off to a good start today!
Falling for Autumn-October 2015
Inspired by Mother Nature's paint brush, our Grade 3-4 artists have been busy using the design elements of line and colour to capture the beauty of the fall season.

Name Spirals
Our first art project! Check out these colourful circular patterns our Grade 3-4 class created. We learned that quality work takes time, and when you persevere you are extra proud of your efforts. Look closely to find each of our Grade 3-4 student’s names hidden swirling about in this dizzy display.

Welcome back to school! It was wonderful to see some familiar Viscount Alexander students and meet some new ones as well. A little sunshine, rest and relaxation seems to have made everyone grow! Looking forward to an awesome year in Grade 3-4!
