What's New 2018-19
uButterflies June 2019
Throughout the school classes have had the opportunities to observe the cycle of life with class caterpillars. After an extensive brainstorm and voting session we named our three caterpillars, Saskai, Petunia, and Flash. Once the caterpillars had moved to the crysalis stage we set up their home in three little insect containers in the classroom, with mesh netting and oranges ready. We waited and observed. until finally we arrived at school Wednesday to find Saskai and Petunia had emerged from their crysalis transformed to beautiful monarch butterflies. Ironically our speedy caterpillar “Flash” was the last to emerge, a day later. Students were keen to observe our butterfly friends fluttering, and sipping the sweet fruit, as their wings dry out, ready to be released.

Ancient Egyptian Scrolls May 15
Students have been learning all about Ancient Societies including Egypt. Using images in books and online, students used images and hieroglyphics to create their very own ancient scrolls. They particularly enjoyed crumpling up their masterpieces to authenticate their artifacts.

Field Trips May 7 & 8th
For two days in May we took our learning on the road. On May 7th we checked out the “Maker Space” at the University of Ottawa. Our Group leaders taught us how to use the program Tinkercad. and challenged us to make our own 3D digital designs. With lots of perseverance and determination students created digital characters designed to fit in a miniature car. Then their designs came to life through the 3D printer. See photo of a few sample characters. We also found out that the Maker Space lab is open to the public to use the 3D printers free of charge on Sundays.
On May 8th our class took a scenic walk along the canal and in front of the parliament buildings to visit the Bank of Canada Museum. We took part in an activity called, Trading Planets, where students were on a trade mission between Earth and the planet Plutopia. Through need for primary and secondary resources students learned about the idea of bartering and trading, and how having a common currency is helpful for an economy. Afterwards we explored the museum, and with bracelets that students could scan throughout, they had a completely interactive experience, creating their own avatar and currency. A terrific learning day in which we made real-world connections in Math and Social Studies.
“Cat and Bird” in the style of Artist Paul Klee March 2019
Starting with a dot, students followed steps using shape and line to draw their cat and bird. This method follows, a Paul Klee quote “ A line is a dot that went for a walk.” Then students used water colours to make their whimsical drawings come to life.

How to Blow A Bubble January 21, 2019
We have been practicing our procedural writing. What better way to practice by chewing gum in school and blowing bubbles, (and for some students, it was their first time!) By following their precise, clearly written steps, you too can blow a bubble!

We had our first skating excursion to the Sandy Hill Arena today, which was great fun!
Now we have some shiny blades hanging in our classroom. Some artistic inspiration for our next skating field trip, in two weeks.

Nature Museum
On Wednesday November 21, 2018 our Grade 4-5 class went on a field trip to the Nature Museum. We started off our day with a workshop in the Mineral Discovery Lab, which gave students a chance to put into practice their newly acquired knowledge about rocks and minerals. The Museum itself is like a castle and we learned that the interior is made of limestone and the exterior is made of sandstone. From there we set off in groups on a scavenger hunt looking for clues and information in each of the galleries; Fossils, Mammals, Water, Earth, Insects and Birds. Some questions were harder to solve than others, but we persevered. A fun day for all!

Awesome Arts Mural Painting. November 2018
The junior students at Viscount Alexander are currently working with our Artist in Residence, Claudia Salguero, as an extension of the Awesome Arts program that runs out of the school with the Sandy Hill Community Centre. Our Grade 4-5 class has been working with Claudia to design and paint a beautiful mural that will be installed on the exterior wall of our school, facing Mann Avenue, as you enter from our parking lot. The design is a compilation of ideas put forward by our students and synthesized by the artist to symbolize the colour of the world that kids want to live in and deserve, the peace, the respect for diversity and appreciation for community work. The final product will be unveiled with our parents and community members at the Awesome Arts Finale Event planned for November 16th between 6:00 pm and 9:00 pm., and will be on display on Viscount Alexander School, for all to enjoy for years to come.

In our Character Corner, Students are learning about Growth Mindset and the Power of Yet! Having a Growth Mindset is the key to success. It is the belief that we are in control of our own ability, and can learn and improve. We are determined to reach our goals and we never give up. Of course we will make mistakes along the way, but mistakes are part of learning. Which means, we understand that some things we might not know just YET. But with the power of believing in ourselves (having a growth mindset), and hard work, effort, and persistence we will get there!
