Nearby Nature with Forest School- March 2018
Our Grade 4-5 class had the opportunity this year to participate in year two of Forest School. For six consecutive Tuesdays we headed outside in nearby nature and enjoyed the great outdoors right here in our community. I hope you have been hearing lots of interesting stories about our adventures. It has been amazing to see the excitement and creativity that has been brought out in the students through nature. With a few ropes, tarps, pots, baskets, and pulleys students have created shelters, swings, tightropes, ziplines and artistic projects. They have also shown leadership as they bonded with our partner kindergarden class, and showed resilience through the varying weather conditions. Students have started writing a recount about the highlights of their days spent at Forest School using photos to create slideshows or news articles about their Forest school experience. A big thank you to all the parent volunteers that came out to help make this experience possible! Also a big shout out to our Forest School leaders Toby and Sonya, thank you, we had a blast!

"Eye" See Colour Wheels
November 21, 2017
In Science the Grade 4 students are studying light and to go along with this unit we did a little colour chemistry in our art class. Students worked with a partner mixing the primary colours (red, yellow, and blue) to make secondary colours (orange, green and purple) and create a colour wheel. Then we continued on, to create an eye using the colour wheel to represent the iris, adding a black pupil and some lashes. These colourful eyes certainly brighten up the hallway.

Peace November 11, 2017
Students created a collage of ripped paper with a newsprint background, layered red poppies, and a word using various fonts to represent Remembrance Day. This art hung in the gym for our Remembrance Day assembly and now adorns our classroom bulletin board. Mixed in with their art are some descriptive poems about what peace means to them, which students typed on their chrome books. Our proud authors also had an opportunity to read their poems to the class, with rousing applause for their efforts. Peace and love to everyone!

Sugar facts
October 12 ,2017 Students have been learning about nutrition in Health and reading labels to find out what exactly is in the foods we are eating. Lead by our student teacher, Miss Givens, students checked out some of our favourite drinks and snacks and measured out the sugar content in baggies, so that we could connect the number we see on the label to an actual amount. Working in groups students created bill boards, with some startling sugar facts. Did you know that sodas like 7up have 42 grams of sugar and Canadians consume an average of 95 grams of added sugar each day? Some interesting findings to think about as we head into candy season….Halloween! |

In our Character Corner, students are learning about
the importance of having a Growth Mindset.
Having a growth mindset means we use positive self
talk and we believe in ourselves. We are open to trying new things. We are determined to reach our goals,
and we never give up! Of course we will make
mistakes along the way, but mistakes are part of
learning. We have read some stories this year that help us see real people and fictional characters who
persevere, i.e. The Most Magnificent Thing, and
Bubblegum Brain, and Terry Fox. We will continue to
build our growth mindset throughout the year and
beyond.
